An Interview With: Wisdom Makubile

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Wisdom (ShotByWizPhoto), I’m a Leeds College of Art postgraduate & I am currently based in Leeds working as a full time photographer.

How did you get into what you do?

I’m a fairly artistic person so naturally I’ve been fascinated by anything that required creativity. I began taking photography seriously during my early years in High school and that led me to study it in college. The course wasn’t exactly what I expected as the modules involved a lot of theory & writing, although this was important I don’t think my mind was quite ready for it at the time. As I progressed into University I decided to try a different course expand my horizon.

How do you work?

I do nightlife events, so a wide lens with a large aperture & a Speedlight is important to carry out most of the work. Alternatively I do studio/location based fashion editorials & lookbooks, in which I prefer to use a beauty dish, soft boxes and a series of strobes. Occasionally I do personal projects such as Leeds Lurking.

How would you describe your work?

I shoot everything handheld so I’m very cautious about how I frame my shots, I do not like emptiness therefore minimalism doesn't do it for me. I like layers and subject movement in a scene to create depth. I like to describe my work as clean but dramatic, I achieve this by using available lighting whenever appropriate, as well as distinct colour grading tones, contrast and muted shadows during post processing.

What is your background?

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Digital Film, Games & Animation. I went off on a tangent during my 2nd year to focus more on photography; it was a decision that I do not regret.

Where does your inspiration come from?

I get a lot of my inspiration from Director David Fincher, he has some of the best craft in framing and composition right now & his work is absolutely worth studying.

Why photography?

I’ve done everything from drawing to film & digital film-making, 3D modeling & animation but I still find photography is my true calling & what I enjoy the most.

What are you goals after University?

I have graduated and I am now in full time self employment. My current goals however are to expand my clientele and to work on much larger projects.

Is there any specific equipment you use?

I currently use a Canon 5D mark 3, Sigma 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.4, 24-70mm 2.8, 15mm 2.8 and some light modifiers such as a beauty dish, soft boxes and brollies.

What's the best piece of advice you could give the readers of The Pupil Sphere?

I know it sounds cliche but it’s important to work hard and grab every opportunity you get, it’s also important to be part of a community of like minded people because in this industry it's not all about what you know, it's who you know.
